Splinter Galaxy (NGC 5907)

NGC 5907 is a moderately large galaxy seen at only 2° from edge on. Its true physical size is about 120'000 light years and the distance from earth is estimated to be 36 million light years.

This deep image reveals parts of the loop system, probably representing the ghostly debris trail of a dwarf galaxy that orbited NGC 5907 but was gradually ripped apart. A more stretched version of the luminance can be found here.

Jay GaBany created an unsurpassed image of NGC 5907 loops in 2008 with a half-meter telescope located at New Mexico.
