NGC 7331, discovered by William Herschel in 1784, is one of the brighter galaxies which is not included in Messier's catalog. It exposes a fine spiral structure despite its small inclination from the edge-on position. The distance to the galaxy is about 50 million lightyears. NGC 7331 is often compared with our Milky Way because of it similarities in overall size and structure.
Several companions and background galaxies are visible. The most prominent is NGC 7337 showing a nice barred spiral structure.
